How did you get into writing?I always wanted to be a writer. From a young age, the idea of writing stories as my day job was a dream come true. But life got in the way. Over the years I wrote a handful of novels (all horrible) and a couple screenplays, none of which will see the light of day. In 2006 I was able to pursue my writing in earnest, and my first novel came out in 2014. Yes, it took me eight years to get published. In 2017 I submitted a novella to HQ Digital in response to a Twitter submission call. Of course, the novella was rejected, but after a few months, Hannah Smith reached out and asked if I could turn the novella into a full-length book. I jumped at the chance. That novella The Silent Woman, which released in 2018 and hit the USA Today Best-seller list in June.
Why did you choose to write in this genre?I wrote six historical mysteries set during World War II. And although I enjoyed writing those books, I found myself reaching for contemporary suspense during the time I spent reading for pleasure. When I was writing my last historical mystery (House of Lies), I got the idea for The Betrayal, my first contemporary suspense. This story stuck in my brain and was an absolute joy to write. I feel like I’ve spent the last few years growing as a writer, finding my sea legs. Now that I’ve landed on contemporary suspense, it seems as though I’ve come home. I plan on staying here awhile!
Who are some of your favourite authors?Oh, I have so many! These days I’m reading Rona Halsall, Alafair Burke, Lauren North, Lisa Jewell, Barbara Copperthwaite, Kimberly Belle, Kate Moretti, and a handful of others. There are so many amazing suspense books out there! My TBR is toppling.
Are you a plotter or a pantser?Total plotter. I spend a lot of time on my outline, but inevitably start changing stuff when I reach the midpoint. (And I’m always so curious about everyone’s process.)
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?First off, I would say that it takes a long time and a lot of work to write for publication. Write, write, and write. Take yourself seriously as a writer and carve out that hour or two each day to get your words down. Finally, and most importantly, don’t give up!
Finally, what are you currently working on?I’ve just turned in the second Olivia Sinclair novel, which will make its way out into the world in late March of 2021. I’m now working on the third book, which will release in October of 2021.
